John the Baptist

Franciscan Monastery, Zadar, Croatia

Perhaps in consideration of the medium, the artist has not represented the saint's garment of animal skins. But the lamb on the book is a clear identifier of John the Baptist.

The statue is part of a collection of four in the monastery. All four are in the same medium and style. The statue of Simeon in that group has a naked Christ Child, a feature of 15th- and 16th-century Presentation in the Temple images, so the John the Baptist is probably from that same period.
